We looked at The Villages, but decided against it and bought a home in Ocala about 5 years ago, moving north from Ft. Lauderdale. (I'm a former Californian, though - many years ago!)
Lots of people really love The Villages...but it's pretty crowded with over 70K people now. It's also rather regimented - in other words, controlled - especially as to what you can and can't do with your property.
We like going down there and hanging out, both at Spanish Springs and Lake Sumter Landing. Lots of fine restaurants and each town center has free entertainment every night; dancing, etc.
I've heard some negatives - like some houses are not well-built, and the aforementioned "controls," and the fact that there are a lot of fees to pay. If you play golf (and most everybody does!), it can be nice but even with all the golf courses, it's hard to get a tee time. I've met people from The Village on our Ocala courses who just gave up and came here to play 'cause their courses are so jammed up.
But lots of people love it and there's many good things about it. Very hot during the summer, though.

It sort of reminds me of a mimosa bloom but this is much prettier.
